These were all ‘own technique’ processes. 30 Karen Fleming was known for her ‘vanishing muslin pieces’ which ‘were very unusual at the time.’ It was a technique she had developed herself, ‘I hadn’t seen anyone else do it, it was influenced by Elizabethan lace collars and so on.’ (see Figure 4.4) The vanishing muslin technique proved ‘easy to copy’ and students started to copy her technique; they weren’t ‘as good’ but it ‘devalued’ the technique for Fleming and she stopped using it. 31 After this Fleming ‘moved on to surfaces rather than imagery’ and developed another ‘own technique’ that no-one else was using to make a series of work with burnished surfaces.

I was really stumped for ages, as I usually work with dissolvable fabrics. The best work in phulkari is found in Haryana in Gurgaon, Karnal, Hissar, Rohtak and Delhi. Threads and Patches is one of the UK's leading providers of patchwork and quilting fabrics, and supplies for all patchwork and quilting needs. They do make prestamped crib cover tops to be embroidered but no quilting lines are included. To maintain rigour I was constantly reflexive in analysis - to ensure the emergent themes were not self-generated but came from the ground up; that I did not overlay participants’ responses with my own interpretations, or make assumptions of sameness based on shared experiences.

My great grandmother lived in Edinburgh and she used to go to the rag man once a week and pick out the best fabrics to unpick, remake and sell.’ Hazel Bruce ‘My father worked his way up to become factory manager and he brought home boxes of outwork for my mum, so we had a sewing machine in the living room and you would see her sewing these huge boxes of bundles of dozens of things like bra straps - it was the lingerie business.’ Nigel Graham Cheney ‘My mother was a great baker she used big 10 stone bags of flour and when they were empty she got the early riser blackbird off them and put four of them together to make a sheet, with run and fell seams so they were smooth - white as the driven snow.’ Pat Campbell ‘When I was a boy sailor you got what they called ‘a housewife’ that was where you kept your needles and stuff.

My first job in the needlecraft industry was bringing back Vogue Knitting magazines that stopped publishing in 1969. Rowlagh Women’s Group, Dublin, designed a panel, ‘A protest by Faceless Women’, to show that many of the issues don’t just affect Irish women but are global issues and also to say women’s skills in ‘a craft which has been traditionally carried out by women but only ever looked upon as menial labour with very little reward or recognition’ should be recognised. 63 A group of women came together to assemble the panels, bringing their children with them (in the usual way that communal childcare co-exists with women’s activities) - the loose panel attached at the bottom contains the handprints of their children.

A walk along the university library shelves on textiles reveals a patchwork of brightly-coloured, patterned book spines. The embroidered or applique work called Dharaniya is an important decoration for the homes of Saurashtra and Kutch people. Bernadette Madden ‘made scarves for a while’ but people ‘would buy a scarf, for a craft price’, then ‘frame it and put it on the wall.’ So she stopped making scarves ‘because they weren’t intended to be framed and put on a wall.’ 91 Irene MacWilliam is interested in the argument about whether or not you should give an explanation or name to your work and how if you do the viewer can ‘key into the name.’ When her work is curated into ‘War Textiles’ exhibitions then it is understood in context but generally she thinks a ‘name’ can be helpful because ‘particularly in patchwork’ people ‘don’t look for meaning.’ They take work ‘just as it is’ and ‘read it as pattern, colour and technique!’ 92 When work is shown in a fine art context, the viewer is primed to look for meaning.
